* Beans are heat-loving plants, seeds germinate only when the soil temperature is not lower than +9+10°C, therefore beans are sown at the same time as cucumbers.
The plot is chosen warm, sunny, fertile, protected from the winds.
In the unstable summer weather conditions, gardeners in Estonia prefer to grow bush beans. They are sown in four rows on a bed. The distance between the rows is 35 cm. Two seeds are placed in each hole, with the concave edge down, so that the radicles can more easily penetrate the soil, and the cotyledon leaves can break through to the light. Seeds are planted shallowly: by 2–3 cm.
Sugar bean varieties are harvested two to three weeks after flowering. Pods are picked selectively so that they do not age and become coarse on the bushes.
Climbing beans differ from bush beans: their stems are very long and need support. For this, stakes are placed before sowing.
Seeds are sown in nests: 5–7 pieces each. The hole is made near the supports. Sometimes climbing beans are planted near gazebos, thus turning them into green cascades.
Climbing beans are demanding of heat and produce a crop later than bush beans. To obtain bean seeds, part of the early pods is left on the plants. The pods are harvested when they not only develop, but also dry out.
